WOLLEN Dr W Wollen honorary consultant psychiatrist to Darenth Park Hospital, Dartford, died on 31 August after a prolonged illness. Waclaw (Ken) Wollen was born and educated in Poland, qualifying in medicine at the University of Warsaw in 1935. As an officer in the Polish Army Medical Corps he saw action Poland, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. As deputy assistant director of medical services of the First Polish Armoured Division he was awarded the MBE, the French and Belgian Croix de Guerre, the Polish Cross of Valour and silver cross of merit with swords, as well as other decorations. In 1945 he was appointed general staff officer, a rare distinction for a doctor. In 1949 he joined the Colonial Medical Service in the Caribbean and after three years he returned to specialise in public health and psychiatry. As consultant psychiatrist in Dartford he specialised in forensic psychiatry. Right from beginning of his medical of his medical career he encouraged and participated in the training of young nurses and doctors. He held the post clinical tutor in mental sub normality until his retirement in 1974. He was a champion of public health and a true believer in the NHS. He wrote numerous papers on psychiatry and mental subnormality Dr Wollen is survived by his wife, Barbara; his son Peter; his daughter, Margaret; and five grandchildren - MAW

(Ken) Wollen urodził się i kształcił się w Polsce, ukończył
medycynę na Uniwersytecie Warszawskim w 1935 roku. Jako oficer
Wojska Polskiego w Medycznej Służbie brał udział w działaniach
wojennych w Polsce, Francji, Belgi, Holandii i Niemczech. Jako
zastępca dowódcy służby medycznych w Pierwszej Polskiej
Dywizji Pancernej został odznaczony odznaczeniem MBE, we Francji
i Belgii, medalami Croix de Guerre, Polskim Krzyżem Walecznych i
Srebrny Krzyż Zasługi z Mieczami, a także innymi odznaczeniami. W
1945 roku został general staff officer, rzadkie wyróżnienie
dla lekarza. W 1949 roku wstąpił do Colonial Medical Service na
Karaibach, po trzech latach wrócił do specjalizacji w
dziedzinie zdrowia publicznego i psychiatrii. Jako konsultant w
dziedzinie psychiatrii w Dartford specjalizował się w psychiatrii
